Tarraco was the capital of Hispania Tarraconensis, one of three Roman provinces in Spain. Though evidence remains all around of Roman occupation the modern city of Tarragona is quite industrial, and the amphitheatre now sits uncomfortably next a busy flyover.

Tarragona was the least 'touristy' of the places I visited, feeling more like a working town than a beach resort. I stayed on the Plaça de la Font, which was the site of the Roman Circus and at night became one of the city's main eating and meeting places.

It was only after I took a wander up the hill behind the Plaça that I found the completely different old quarter; a mixture of regeneration and rundown housing, modern restaurants and derelict spaces.

The old part of Tarragona is covered with street art. It's sophisticated and interesting, and has more motivation behind it than simple 'tagging'. I found a lot of provocative and political pieces on the walls, and many symbols of Catalan unity. Click here to see more.
